Bio
Dr Cindy George is a distinguished scientist and leader in chronic kidney disease (CKD) research across Africa. She serves as a Specialist Scientist at the Non-Communicable Diseases Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), where she leads the Kidney Diseases Research Programme, and plays a central role in advancing the understanding of CKD epidemiology and risk factors in African populations.
Her research portfolio centres on characterising the burden of CKD on the continent, identifying underlying mechanisms, and developing evidence to inform prevention and public health strategies. As the Chair and manager of the CKD-Africa Collaboration she has spearheaded efforts to pool individual-level data from studies across multiple African countries, enabling more accurate estimates of disease burden and fostering collaborations that bridge research gaps.
Dr. George’s work also includes mentoring early career scientists, sourcing research funding, and driving initiatives that strengthen scientific capacity regionally.
