About the Book
Published on 14 September 2026 by CRC Press, part of Taylor & Francis, Genomics in Africa is a new landmark volume bringing together researchers working across the continent and the wider global genomics community to document a decade of genomic discovery and consider the future of genomics research in Africa.
The 304-page book brings together perspectives from researchers working across infectious disease, cardiometabolic traits, cancer, mental health, pharmacogenomics and metagenomics. It also examines the wider research ecosystem needed to advance genomics in Africa, including biobanking, research infrastructure, ethics and community engagement, funding, capacity building and sustainable genomics programmes.
Africa holds the greatest genetic diversity of any human population, yet African populations remain substantially underrepresented in genomic research. Genomics in Africa documents the progress made over the past decade, including the expansion of initiatives such as H3Africa and the growth of African research capacity and leadership. Through contributions from researchers involved in this work, the book places African scientists and scientific leadership at the centre of the continent's genomic future.

The book includes contributions from the following members of the KidneyGenAfrica consortium: Professor Segun Fatumo, Professor Michèle Ramsay, Professor Nicola Mulder, and Dr Adebowale A. Adeyemo.
Professor Segun Fatumo, Chair of Genomic Diversity at Queen Mary University of London and Head of NCD Genomics at the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, is also co-editor of the volume.

About the editors
Professor Segun Fatumo is Professor and Chair of Genomic Diversity at Queen Mary University of London (PHURI) and Head of NCD Genomics at the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit. He leads several major genomics initiatives across Africa, including KidneyGenAfrica, BCX-Africa, the Nigerian 100K Genome Project and the Uganda Genome Resource, and holds advisory roles at Genomics England, the Berlin Institute of Health and the GWAS Catalog.
Dr Tinashe Chikowore is an Investigator in the Channing Division of Network Medicine and the Genetics Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He works on the genetic architecture of cardiometabolic and non-communicable diseases in African populations.
